Functions During The Event

Several functions are being planned.  The first will be held on Sunday, 24 March which is the first day of swimming and diving competition.  This will be an informal evening to experience a taste of New Zealand.  Another function to be held on Saturday 30 March after the swimming in the Pool is completed which is the Gala Farewell party.  Further details of the sumptuous food and entertainment will be included in the entry book.

Waterpolo competitors and supporters have in the past been left to their own devices for partying at the end of the event.  In 2002, we will be putting on a Great Farewell Party for them as well.

Accommodation

We are receiving many enquiries for individuals and groups to come to Christchurch and have been finalising accommodation already for some including 24 from Sweden, 12 from USA, 70 from South Africa, and as you will see on the accommodation list attached, already two hotels are fully committed to large groups.

We have travel agents from Australia, USA, Japan, and Brazil in Christchurch this month to check on the facilities (venue, accommodation etc).  So, you don’t have to wait to book accommodation.  Remember its first in, first served (as the Swedes found in securing one of the closest accommodations near QEII, and an American group did with the other).

Many of the requests have asked for accommodation near the Pool.  Well Christchurch is not like that.  QEII is about 12-15 minutes from the centre of the city (Cathedral Square), by bus or car.  Nearly all the accommodation is closer to the city centre.  To make this point clearer we have included a simple map of Christchurch showing key roads and approximate location of our main accommodation areas.  This is on page one.  Transport is very quick and easy in Christchurch, and if you buy the shuttle bus ticket for the Championships, you will be able to travel between the pool and your hotel as many times as you please during the day.  Please note that the “free shuttle” shown on the map is NOT the Championships shuttle.  The free shuttle operates in the inner city area only.  The championship shuttle operates between the major accommodation areas, and the pool.  The cost of this is $50.00 for adults, and $30 for children.

New Zealand Home To ‘Best Airline In World’

Air New Zealand has been rated the world’s best airline in a biennial survey of 30,500 travellers.  For the first time in six years, Air New Zealand topped three-time winner Singapore Airlines in the passenger satisfaction survey conducted by the UK Consumers’ Association for magazine Holiday Which?  Using the question: “Would you recommend this airline to a friend?” as a starting point, airlines were also assessed on cabin air quality, crew, catering, check-in staff, cleanliness, entertainment and seat comfort.  Of the Air New Zealand passengers surveyed, 75% indicated they would “definitely” recommend the airline to a friend, and a further 18% signalled they would “probably” recommend it.  The survey is of 61 airlines.
